Celebrating Neurodiversity: Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the neurodiversity within our community, both as members and volunteers. This is an open floor to share, learn, and connect.

  • If you are neurodivergent, what is a unique strength or perspective you feel it brings to your volunteering?
  • What is a misconception about autism or neurodiversity that you wish more people understood?

The Struggle of Being Autistic and Identifying Emotions

Disclaimer: I cannot and do not speak for all autistic people. As an autistic person, one of the biggest challenges I face is identifying and understanding my emotions. It’s not that I don’t feel emotions; I often experience them intensely, but I struggle to recognize and label them. The disconnect between feeling something deeply and not being able to articulate it can be confusing and overwhelming.

Key Points

  • Alexithymia: A significant number of autistic people experience alexithymia, which complicates emotional identification.
  • Sensory Overload: This can make it hard to differentiate between physical discomfort and emotional states.
  • Communication Barriers: Many autistic individuals may struggle to verbalize feelings accurately.

Strategies for Identifying Emotions

  1. Body Awareness: Focusing on physical sensations can signal emotional states.
  2. Emotional Charts or Apps: These can help in recognizing patterns in emotions.
  3. Routine Emotional Check-ins: Schedule regular check-ins to build emotional awareness.
  4. Creative Expression: Use art, music, or other creative outlets to express emotions.
  5. Seeking Support: Work with a therapist experienced in autism for personalized strategies.

Being autistic means processing the world differently, including emotions. Acknowledging these challenges and providing supportive tools can foster greater emotional self-awareness.
